It’s all about the flowers!

Flower sowing started just before Easter, getting those first seeds sown in the hot box for late April planting. I’ve gone slightly DAHLIA crazy this year and managed to halt at 7 different varieties that add up another 70 plants. I potted these up when they arrived and they are  starting to come up in the warmth of the prop tunnel. Last years DAHLIAS were cut back in the autumn and our old corridor carpet placed on top to keep out the frost, I will mulch these soon with a lovely layer of municipal compost and make sand rings to keep the slugs off (use a nice ‘sharp sand’!).

Other early sowings included: sweet peas, cosmos, tagetes, tithonia, statice, zinnia, snapdragon(go for pure white), achillea and coreopsis.

I will sow a successional sowing of all of these and add: Lupin ( blue sunrise),cornflower, craspedia, buplerum, borage, aster and cornflowers.

In addition direct into the ground i will sow, Ammi majus and Ammi visnaga and two shades of the wonderful Californian poppy (orange and ivory castle). Phaecelia will also go in in May to feed the bees and make the flower bunches beautiful.

At the moment i’m cutting my tulips to take to market and sell direct from ‘The Veg Shed’. These will be followed by foxgloves, honesty, sweet williams and early calendula bunched with yarrow, wild carrot and cow parsley from Hugh’s wild flower plot.

Liz 🙂
